Is it better to build your own PC or buy ready-made PC builds?

  • Buying a new computer is not as easy or simple as some people think, especially if your usage is varied and based on a number of different factors. When choosing or even thinking about buying a new desktop computer, many questions come to mind, such as: What is the nature of this computer’s use? Is it intended for gaming or work? Is this computer used for gaming or for work that requires a lot of hardware power? Or will average specifications suffice? And many other important questions that ultimately determine the choice.
  • Finally, after choosing all these diverse factors, and before starting to choose the computer parts themselves, there is one thing left, one final question: Will you assemble a computer yourself or will you buy a PC assembly (a ready-made computer or an assembled computer)?
  • To answer this puzzling question, let's take you on a quick tour of the fundamental differences between these two types of computers, their advantages and disadvantages, to understand which is better in different circumstances and when to choose one. Then, we'll review some of the good options available that will undoubtedly help you in your upcoming selection process.

DIY PC builds or buy a pre-built PC build?

  • We'll answer this question very briefly, leaving the rest of the details in the article for you to read in detail and understand exactly what you want. Therefore, it would be a good idea to build a computer yourself if you want to save money, then get what suits your specific use without worrying about the time factor.
  • While with pre-assembled devices you are bound to specific options that may not be convenient for you, but they offer several advantages such as time saving and a longer warranty.
  • For more information on the advantages and disadvantages of both pre-assembled and custom-built devices, you can read the article to learn more about them and avoid the bad ones.

Hand-assembled computer:

  • Well, this type of computer is the most popular among users, whether professionals or even amateurs. Whether you assemble the computer parts yourself or someone else assembles a computer that suits your financial capabilities and uses, hand- assembled computers will provide greater choice and a wide library of options and benefits, which we will mention in the following lines.

Price vs. Performance:

  • One of the main reasons why a self -assembled computer is better for the user is price versus performance. Hand-assembled computers offer better value for money than pre-assembled computers. This is because pre-assembled computers are marketed as ready-to-use, requiring no additional assembly effort, and they also offer some additional benefits.
  • Although they are relatively more expensive than hand-assembled computers, pre-assembled computers are sometimes cheaper, such as during holiday seasons or during sales before the release of a new generation of hardware.
  • As for components or computers that you assemble yourself, each part of the computer has a different warranty than the other part. In most cases, the warranty for individual parts extends for more than two years, meaning a total warranty of more than two years for all parts, and the warranty extends for longer periods for some individual parts. For example, Intel and AMD processors have a three-year warranty, and some PSU manufacturers offer a five-year warranty.
  • Motherboards can also offer a 3-year warranty, and graphics cards usually come with a 3-year warranty as well.

Disadvantages of PC builds personally:

  • Assembling a computer yourself is a process that takes some time to learn. If you don't have any previous experience, you'll need to read, browse, and watch some videos to understand the selection process, how it's done, how to set your priorities, and how to identify the appropriate parts so you don't get scammed.
  • Another thing that takes some time is the assembly process itself, and of course the purchasing process. The assembly process without prior experience requires a lot of care, and certainly some explanations and walking through it step by step.
  • There are two types of pre-built computers. We can say that they are not completely pre- assembled computers that the user cannot change. Rather, there are fully pre-built computers that you buy as is without any changes. There is a type of computer that is pre-built with a set of options available to the user, so the user enters the company’s website to buy a certain computer, and then enters piece by piece and chooses between the specified parts.
  • What's unique about this type is that it adds some character to the computer. It's a combination of both, providing you with only compatible pieces to choose from. This eliminates the risk problem we mentioned and the time problem, and provides the advantage of options.

Pre-assembled computer features:

  • As for pre-assembled computers, they offer many advantages, such as:

1- Easy warranty:

Pre-assembled computers from companies offer a simpler type of warranty. Pre-assembled computers are entirely the responsibility of the manufacturer. Therefore, if a defect occurs, all you have to do is send the entire computer to the company, and they will then identify and repair the defect. You don't have to worry about anything if a problem occurs; you don't have to do anything. This provides greater convenience and saves time, making it ideal for businesses or individuals who are always busy or don't like wasting time troubleshooting their computers.

2- Saving time:

Pre-assembled computers are ready to use right out of the box. You don't need to spend time choosing parts, studying the computer, or understanding how to assemble, repair, or choose parts. All you have to do is choose the computer that best suits your needs, in terms of graphics card and processor. Then, pick it up and start playing with it or working on it right away. This type of computer will save you more time than you would have spent learning or waiting for your parts to arrive.

  • Custom-built PCs?

The third type, which we mentioned implicitly in the previous lines, is the best for beginners who want to get the advantages of the previous two types. This type of computer is pre-configured with a set of options available to the user, so the user enters the company’s website to buy a certain computer, then enters piece by piece and chooses between the specified parts. What is distinctive about this type is that it adds some personality to the computer, as it is a mixture of the two types, as it provides you with only compatible parts to choose from. Here, it eliminates the problem of risk that we talked about (the bottleneck) and the problem of time, and provides the advantage of options.
