keyboard

The keyboard is the primary input device for your computer, whether you're typing a message or calculating numerical data. But did you know you can control your computer using the keyboard as well? You can work more efficiently if you're familiar with some basic keyboard commands (computer instructions).

How are the keys organized?

Based on their functions, the keys on a keyboard can be divided into several groups:

  • Make keys (alphanumeric) The letters, numbers, punctuation, and symbols on these keys are identical to those on a conventional typewriter.
  • Control keys. These keys can be used alone or in combination with other keys to perform specific tasks. Ctrl, Alt, and the Windows logo key are the three most commonly used control keys. Esc and the Windows logo key are also used.
  • Function keys. Certain operations can be performed using function keys. Up to F12, these keys are referred to as F1, F2, F3, etc. Different programs have different uses for these keys.
  • Directional keys. You can edit text and navigate between documents using these keys. The arrow keys, Home, End, Page Up, Page Down, Delete, and Insert are some of them.
  • Numeric keypad. The numeric keypad is easy to use and allows for quick number entry. The keys are arranged in a block, like a traditional adding machine or calculator.

write a text

The cursor, also known as the insertion point, is a flashing vertical line that appears when you need to enter something into a program, email, or text field. It marks the beginning of the text you're typing. You can move the cursor using the arrow keys on your keyboard or by clicking the desired area with your mouse (see the "Using the navigation keys" section of this article).

Shift, Caps Lock, Tab, Enter, Spacebar, and Backspace are part of the typing keys along with letters, punctuation, punctuation marks, and symbols.

Key name and how to use it

Shift key

To type a capital letter, hold down the Shift key while typing any letter. To type a capital letter above another key, hold down the Shift key while pressing that key.

Caps lock

To type all letters in capital letters, simply press the Caps Lock key once. To disable this feature, press the Caps Lock key again. A light may appear on the keyboard indicating whether the Caps Lock key is active.

Tab

To advance the cursor a few spaces, press Tab. To advance to the next text field in the form, you can instead press Tab.

Enter

To advance the cursor to the beginning of the next line, press Enter. Enter will select the highlighted button in any dialog window.

distance

To advance the cursor one space, press the space bar.

Delete key

To clear a character before the cursor or the currently selected text, press Backspace.

Use keyboard shortcuts

You can perform tasks using your keyboard by using keyboard shortcuts. Because they enable you to work more quickly, they are known as shortcuts. In fact, using one or more keyboard keys can speed up any action or command you can perform with your mouse.

A plus sign (+) between two or more keys in Help topics indicates that these keys must be pressed at the same time. For example, Ctrl+A indicates that you must press and hold Ctrl before pressing A. To continue holding down Ctrl and Shift while pressing A, use the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+A.

Select options, commands, and menus.

Using your keyboard, you can access menus, choose instructions, and perform other actions. Pressing the Alt key and an underlined letter in a program will display the menu for that letter. To select this command from a menu item, click the underlined letter. Pressing the Alt key overlays a letter (rather than underlining it) in applications that use the ribbon, such as Paint and WordPad, so that it can be clicked.

To access the File menu, press Alt+F, then press P to select the Print option.

This method also works in dialog boxes. Pressing Alt plus the underlined letter next to an option in a dialog box allows you to select that option.

The keyboard shortcuts shown in the following table are very useful. See Keyboard Shortcuts for more information, for example:

  • Windows logo key is the Windows logo key to launch the start button.
  • Shift + Tab to switch between running applications and windows
